The Story Behind Scottish Pebbles: Finding Inspiration in Quiet Moments

Sometimes the most meaningful moments of inspiration arrive when we are not searching for them.

Scottish Pebbles began with a quiet summer morning on my patio, a coffee in hand, and a moment to simply pause and notice what was around me.

There was no rush. No pressure to create. Just time to observe the colours, textures and subtle changes of light falling across the pebbles. I didn't expect to feel inspired at that moment. I was just struck by an idea.

This idea reminded me that inspiration is often found in the simplest moments - when we allow ourselves to slow down and really see what is in front of us.

The pebbles that inspired this painting were not something I had planned to paint. They were part of an ordinary moment, but something about their natural colours and textures caught my attention.

I was drawn to the gentle variations in tone, the earthy colours, and the way light and shadow created depth and interest.

Nature has a wonderful way of offering endless inspiration when we take the time to look closely. A simple collection of pebbles can hold so much character - each one unique, shaped by time and its surroundings.

I found myself sketching out a composition - I started both paintings that same week but only one was completed. Both inspired by the same theme, light, shadows and noticing.

How I brought the piece to life...

When I began painting Scottish Pebbles, I wanted to capture more than just the appearance of the pebbles. I wanted to capture the feeling of that morning - the calm, stillness and sense of being present.

Through layers of colour and texture, the painting slowly developed.

Although the painting was created over the course of just one week, the inspiration behind it came from a much slower moment: taking time to notice, reflect and appreciate the beauty around me.

Why quiet moments matter...

As artists, and simply as people, we often feel we need to be constantly doing, achieving or moving forward.

But I believe some of our best ideas come when we allow ourselves space to pause.

A quiet coffee in the garden, a walk outside, noticing the colours of the landscape - these small moments can refresh us and spark creativity in unexpected ways. They matter more than you may realise.

Scottish Pebbles is a reminder to slow down, take notice and find beauty in the everyday.

Bringing a moment of calm into your home...

I hope that this painting provides that sense of calm to whoever has the pleasure of owning her.

Thank you for taking the time to read the story behind Scottish Pebbles. She was a joy to create and a gentle reminder that when we create from a place of calm, the most meaningful work can emerge. 🤍
