Choosing Art: Why Sometimes We Need to Trust Our Instincts

Choosing Art: Why Sometimes We Need to Trust Our Instincts

I had a lovely chat on Instagram recently with the new owner of one of my paintings, and it left me smiling.

She told me how much she loved the story behind the painting, but also shared something I found really interesting: red isn’t a colour she would ordinarily choose.

And yet, there was something about this particular piece that spoke to her.

Rather than sticking with what she knew she liked, she decided to take a risk, step outside her comfort zone and try something different.

I love that.

We all have our preferences, the colours we gravitate towards, the things we feel comfortable with. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But every now and then, something unexpected catches our attention. We might not be able to explain exactly why, but we feel drawn to it all the same.

I think that’s one of the lovely things about living with art. Sometimes a painting doesn't simply complement what we already have; it introduces us to something new. A different colour, a different feeling, or a story that resonates with us in a way we hadn't anticipated.

As an artist, it’s especially rewarding to hear that a piece has connected with someone on this level. Knowing that she loved the story behind the painting, and was willing to embrace a colour she wouldn't usually choose, made me appreciate that connection even more.

It’s a lovely reminder that sometimes the things we end up loving most are the things we might never have chosen if we'd played it safe.

I hope this painting brings its new owner lots of happiness, and perhaps even inspires her to see red a little differently.

And I wonder how many of us might discover something wonderful if we occasionally allowed ourselves to take that little leap into the unfamiliar?

Pruikenboom was carefully packaged and shipped to the United States.
